Frequently Asked Questions: Pumpkin Care & Natural Variations
Are all pumpkins the same?
No. Pumpkins are natural, perishable products. Each pumpkin is unique, and its appearance, condition, and lifespan will vary. Differences in shape, size, color, and surface texture are part of their natural character.
How long will my pumpkins last?
There is no guaranteed lifespan. Longevity depends on several factors, including the individual pumpkin, weather, temperature, humidity, display location, handling, and care. We cannot guarantee that pumpkins will last throughout the fall season, until a particular holiday, or for any specific length of time.
Pumpkins may naturally soften, discolor, develop mold, or decay over time. Proper care may help extend their lifespan, but does not guarantee it.
Can I keep uncarved pumpkins on my Las Vegas porch?
Choose a shaded, cool, dry location with good airflow whenever possible. Pay attention to the conditions on your porch rather than the calendar: direct sun, hot surfaces, and heat trapped around a display can make the spot unsuitable. During excessive heat or freezing weather, move pumpkins to a cooler, dry, sheltered location if possible.
How should I handle and care for my pumpkins?
Handle pumpkins gently, supporting them from underneath rather than carrying them by the stem. Display them in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location whenever possible. Avoid excessive moisture, standing water, direct heat, and freezing conditions. Leave room around pumpkins for airflow, and check them regularly for changes.
How do I protect my porch, furniture, or flooring?
Use a protective tray or barrier when displaying pumpkins on surfaces that could be damaged by moisture or staining. During our displays, most pumpkins will be placed on hay/straw bales but some will be directly on the floor, check beneath the pumpkins regularly, keep the display area dry, and do not allow water to collect.
Should I cover pumpkins with burlap during extreme weather?
A loose burlap covering may offer some temporary protection, but it does not guarantee protection from excessive heat or freezing temperatures. Keep airflow around the pumpkins and avoid coverings that trap heat or hold moisture against them. Moving pumpkins to a suitable sheltered location is preferable when conditions become extreme.
Will carving or decorating affect their lifespan?
Carving, puncturing, or otherwise altering a pumpkin can shorten its lifespan. If longevity is a priority, leave pumpkins uncarved and avoid decorations that break the skin.
What do I acknowledge when purchasing pumpkins?
By purchasing a pumpkin or a product or service that includes pumpkins through this website, you acknowledge and accept these natural variations and understand that seasonal longevity is not guaranteed.
